Key insights to reduce wind turbine noise

Why Acoustic Insights™?

Reducing noise starts with understanding its source.

The standard

IEC 61400-11

tells you whether a turbine complies.

Our service

MuTech Acoustic Insights™

helps you understand where noise originates, what is causing it, and how to reduce it.

Standard IEC noise measurements provide an overall picture of a turbine’s acoustic performance. They rarely give an understanding of the underlying noise sources or how to address them. With our extensive field experience and purpose-built suite of acoustic measurement tools and analysis methods, we bring these missing insights to light.

This allows our clients to gain a deep understanding of their turbine’s acoustic profile, noise sources, and performance of noise reduction measures. We also work alongside our clients to identify, plan, implement, and assess noise reduction measures that help them solve problems due to turbine noise, and realise their turbine’s AEP potential.

High-resolution acoustic array

8×4 m 64-microphone array designed specifically for wind turbine noise source localisation. Enables identification of problematic areas and comparison of different blade treatments.

Advanced data processing & analytics

State-of-the-art beamforming algorithms with custom analysis pipelines. Integrated with turbine SCADA so source-level trends with operating parameters and weather conditions can be identified.

Simultaneous IEC-compliant measurements

Full IEC 61400-11 setup running alongside the array. Allows for correlation between certification-standard compliance data and detailed source-level diagnostics.

Rapidly deployable in-field

Designed to deploy within one day at operational wind farms. Light-weight structures, weatherproofed instrumentation, and a refined operating protocol based on extensive field experience.

Our expertise

Built on real-world experience and a decade of
wind turbine noise research

Our clients have used MuTech Acoustic Insights™ to understand and address noise challenges on over a dozen wind turbines. We strengthen this real-world experience with close links to the TU Delft Aeroacoustics and Noise Research Groups, two leading institutes on wind turbine noise and acoustic measurement techniques. This allows us to bring cutting-edge tools, techniques, and knowledge to our clients to address their most pressing noise challenges.

Talk to us

If you are facing a challenge with turbine noise, we can help you understand and solve it.

We provide tailored measurement, analysis, and consulting services to help solve problems due to turbine noise. This spans a wide range of situations including: identifying priority interventions to reduce overall turbine noise, achieving turbine noise regulatory compliance, addressing community noise complaints, or derisking a permit.

We are able to move quickly with a typical engagement running from 6 to 10 weeks from start to delivery and review of insights.
